I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… I love the new Sentimental Swirls Stamp Set. There’s something really satisfying about stamping those bold outlines. They look good just as they are, or coloured in using a variety of techniques. What’s more, the flowers and one of the leaves coordinate with two punches although they’re certainly not essential. However for today’s simple Sunday project I wanted to concentrate on the largest of the swirls. With some patterned paper and a little two-step stamping it all came together really quickly.
My project began as I was thinking of new ways to use some of the more subtle patterns in my various paper packs. Stamping directly onto it isn’t something I do often but I decided to give it a go. So for this experiment I looked through the Hand-Penned 12″ x 12″ Designer Series Paper (DSP) pack. In the end I chose a pretty Mint Macaron striped pattern over a white background.
Having chosen the paper I cut a piece 3-3/4″ x 5″ with the strips horizontal. Then from the Sentimental Swirls Stamp Set I took that large decorative swirl and stamped it onto the paper using Evening Evergreen ink. Next I chose the “happy birthday” sentiment and stamped it in the top left corner of the DSP.
While I liked where the design was going I thought that swirl needed an accent. So going back to the Sentimental Swirls Stamp Set I chose the little bird outline stamp. It fitted perfectly at the top of the swirl but looked slightly odd with the stripes running across its body. So from the stamp set I took the solid ‘bird body’ image. After tapping it onto the ink pad I stamped lightly onto some scrap paper to remove a little of the ink. Then without re-inking the stamp I stamped onto the body of the bird on the DSP.
The lighter ink allowed the details of the bird to show through, but so did the stripes! There was nothing for it I needed a small scrap of Basic White Card. Inking up the solid image again, I stamped-off onto scrap paper as before. However then I stamped the body onto the Basic White Card. All I had to do now was cut around the simple shape with my Paper Snips. I even chopped off the wing tip and tail feathers. Then using Multipurpose Liquid Glue (Tombow) I fixed the small piece over the bird on the DSP and just like magic that wing tip and tail reappeared. Perfect!
All the hard work was done and I just needed to create the card base and layers.
I started by using my Paper Trimmer to cut and score some Mint Macaron Card for my card base. Then I folded it along the scored line and sharpened the crease with a Bone Folder.
Next I cut a 3-7/8″ x 5-1/8″ piece of Evening Evergreen Card, Then using liquid glue I mounted the stamped DSP onto this layer. Before going any further I chose some Mint Macaron embellishments from the Genial Gems pack and added them around the sentiment. This allowed me to ensure they were firmly attached before fixing the assembled layer to the card base with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
Finally I cut a 4″ x 5-1/4″ piece of Basic White Card and stamped the bird outline in the bottom right corner. Using liquid glue I fixed this piece inside the card base. Then with one final bird outline stamped onto the front of a Basic White Medium Envelope I was done.
So quick and easy to do, and so sweet. It’s the perfect solution for when you need a card in a hurry don’t you think?
