After yesterday’s Valentine’s Day project I decided to tone it down today. As I was going through my stock of cards I realised I have very few sympathy and get well cards. After birthday cards these seem to be the ones that I sell the most. So with that in mind I decided to create a simple sympathy card. For that I wanted a suitable patterned paper with muted colours in a design that wasn’t too busy. I found it in the Simply Elegant Specialty Designer Series Paper (DSP) pack

ELEGANT LAYERS
With the DSP chosen I used it to decide my project colours; grey and vanilla, and set to work.
First I used my Paper Trimmer to cut and score some Basic Gray Card. Then I folded it along the scored line and sharpened the crease with a Bone Folder to create a card base.
Next , among the scraps of Simply Elegant DSP I found a strip that was 1-3/4″ wide. While the width was perfect I needed to trim it down to 5-1/2″ long. Then I mounted it onto a 1-7/8″ x 5-1/2″ piece of Very Vanilla Card using Multipurpose Liquid Glue (Tombow). With that done I glued the assembled layers onto the card front.
I’d already decided to make the Simply Elegant DSP my coordinating feature so I continued by cutting a 3/4″ x 5-1/4″ strip. Using liquid glue again I fixed this piece down the right-hand edge of a 4″ x 5-1/4″ piece of Very Vanilla Card. Along the left edge of the DSP I then added a 1/8″ x 5-1/4″ strip of Basic Gray Card. This assembled layer was glued inside the card base.
Finally I cut a 2-1/4″ x 6″ piece of the DSP and glued it to the flap of a Very Vanilla Medium Envelope. Then I trimmed off the excess paper with Paper Snips using the edge of the flap as a guide.
WITH SYMPATHY
In no time at all I was ready for the sentiment and for that I turned to the free Sale-A-Bration Stamp Set called Special Moments.
Using Basic Gray ink I stamped “With sympathy” onto some Very Vanilla Card. Then I punched it out using the Tailored Tag Punch and added it to the card using Stampin’ Dimensionals.

Finally I wanted to add a few embellishments but not ‘bling’ so I pulled out a pack of Classic Matte Dots. This pack contains dots in two sizes: 3mm and 4mm, in four colours; Basic Black, Basic Gray, Very Vanilla and White. They’re shown on page 59 of the January to June Mini Catalogue but I feel the photo is deceiving. You see they look quite flat, when in fact they have straight sides, unlike ‘pearls’ which are domed like a half-sphere. I also like that they’re in neutral colours so can go with any kind of project, and coordinate with any colour.
Anyway, I decided to use the smaller size in Basic Gray and added a line of three alongside the bottom of the sentiment. And with that my simple sympathy card was complete.
I’m really pleased with this project, it was quick and easy to make but is still elegant too. What do you think?
