Although I’ve been making cards etc. for more than ten years, things don’t always go to plan, However that doesn’t mean I throw these ‘mistakes’ away. Most of them are salvageable in some form and it would be silly to waste the work I’d already put in. So that’s how I came across the geese for today’s Simple Sunday card. I’d stamped and coloured them for another project and then dropped my ink pad onto the card! Thankfully it missed the geese, so I cut them out and saved them.

SILLY GOOSE START
This image of the pair of geese comes from the Sillly Goose Stamp Set. I’d started by stamping them onto some Thick Basic White Card using Pebbled Path ink. Then I’d coloured the goose feathers using light and dark Gray Granite Stampin’ Blends alcohol markers. For the feet and beak I’d chosen light and dark Pumpkin Pie Stampin’ Blends. Then as I mentioned I dropped an open ink pad just missing the finished geese and had to start over. Once that project was complete, I took my Paper Snips and cut the original geese from the damaged cardstock and stored them in the Silly Goose Stamp Set case.
Fast forward to today, and as I opened the stamp case out fell the geese I’d coloured and fussy-cut more than seven weeks ago. So that’s when I decided to use that same image for the coordinating feature on my project.
To so this I first cut a 4″ x 5-1/4″ piece of Basic White Card and pulled out a Basic White Medium Envelope. Then I inked up the stamp and stamped just the left goose in the bottom right corner of the card as well as on the envelope front. Next I coloured the beaks with Pumpkin Pie Stampin’ Blends but opted to leave the feathers white.
For my A2 card base I used my Paper Trimmer to cut a 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ piece of Thick Basic White Card. Then with the long side at the top I used the scoring blade to score the card at 4-1/4″. With that done I folded the card along the scored line and sharpened the crease with a Bone Folder. Finally, using Multipurpose Liquid Glue (Tombow) I fixed the completed 4″ x 5-1/4″ layer on the inside.
SCRAPPY DECISIONS
Now I could turn my attention to the front of the card and I went looking for a background for my geese. That’s when I remembered a scrap of a ‘beach’ scene left over from a gift tag project I’d created last week. I’d stored that 3-1/4″ x 4″ piece with the rest of the Fresh As A Daisy 12″ x 12″ Designer Series Paper (DSP) pack so it was really easy to find.

For my mat I decided to use Basic Black Card as that scrap pocket is rather full. I found a piece that was the right width at 3-1/2″ but a little too long and thought of trimming it. Instead I decided to go with the flow and simply glued the DSP 1/8″ below the top edge. That left a 7/8″ strip of the card showing at the bottom that I could use as a backing for my sentiment.
Going back to the Silly Goose Stamp Set I chose “sending gaggles of good wishes”. Then in my Basic White scraps I found a piece that was 11/16″ x 1-7/8 which would work perfectly. After stamping the sentiment with Tuxedo Black ink I just glued it in the middle of the black space.
Next I attached the fussy-cut geese onto the DSP using pieces of Stampin’ Dimensionals and I was ready to add the layers to my card front. As I was deciding on the exact placement I wondered if I should go against my initial instinct to centre the piece on the card. However when I angled the layer it seemed to be missing something. So in seach of inspiration I went back to my scraps of Fresh As A Daisy DSP.
There I found a 1-1/2″ x 4″ scrap of the Wild Wheat background design which coordinated with the ‘beach’. That’s when I cut the DSP into two 3/4″ x 4″ pieces and glued them to the back of the black layer at an angle. What a difference that made! Finally using liquid glue I mounted the layers onto the card front and my project was complete.
I love it when a project design seems to fall into place like this. What’s more, apart from the card base and white liner on the inside, everything else was just scraps. Win-win!
